Title: Weaponized Grief? No—It’s Love Turned Into Advocacy

Recently, a kratom activist on social media posted a troubling message:

“Weaponized grief is an addiction especially when money is involved.”

This isn’t just hurtful—it’s dangerously dismissive.

Let’s be clear: There is nothing addictive about grief. And there is nothing profitable about losing a child to a preventable substance-related death.

My son, Joseph S. Lumbrazo, died from mitragynine toxicity on August 30, 2020. Since that day, my life has not been about money—it has been about meaning. It has been about saving lives. And it has been about demanding truth, transparency, and accountability from an industry that too often hides behind unregulated marketing and anecdotal testimonials.

When we speak up as grieving families, it’s not to “weaponize” our pain. It’s because silence would be complicity. We advocate because we couldn’t protect our loved one, and we don’t want another parent, child, or spouse to feel the devastation we live with every single day.

There are real risks to kratom. And there are real deaths—confirmed by toxicology, coroners, and medical records. Pretending otherwise does not protect anyone; it only ensures more families will grieve.

To those who accuse us of using grief for gain: ask yourself, what do we actually gain? Public scrutiny? Cyberbullying? Endless nights of mourning?
